St. Georges, Delaware is located approximately nine miles east of Chesapeake City and five miles from the east end of the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal where the canal meets the Delaware River. Like Chesapeake City, the town is situated on both sides of the canal. St. Georges is not incorporated and they do not have their own town government.

On January 10, 1939 at about 8:30 A.M. the S. S. Waukegan, west bound from Reedy Point, struck St. Georges bridge, completely demolishing the structure and killing the bridgetender and his assistant. As a result of that accident, the controls for the Chesapeake City Bridge were moved ashore and no lives were lost when the 1942 Chesapeake City disaster occurred. The St. Georges drawbridge was replaced in 1942 by the current four lane, Route 13, overhead bridge.
