If you have pictures of Canal Street and would like to share them on this website, please contact me.

West End of Canal Street @ Hemphill Street Intersection 1950s
The "Hollow" and ferry dock would be to the left.
Stapp home on far right was turned and moved to Biddle Street (400 Block).
Union Street Intersection would be to the right after 3 more homes and a garage.

Canal Street was a victim of the 1960s canal widening.

Sometimes referred to as Lewis Street. However, Lewis St. was removed when the canal was converted to sea level - early 1900s. (Source: 1858 Map of Cecil County)

It appears that Bank Street became Canal St. in the vicinity of the ferry dock. Canal Street ran parallel to Biddle Street and was situated between Biddle and the canal in North Chesapeake City.

As we know it today: Canal Street ran from the ferry enter/exit walkway ramp & road which would have been located about in front of 335 Biddle (Northrup) eastward to the end of the 500 block of Biddle Street.

As Remembered mid 1950s -West to East as if being observed from the canal:

Heavy-Duty Swings & Seesaws, Vacant Building Foundations & Great Sledding.

Dirt road (Bank St. Ext.?) to Ferry Slip/Dock (pictured above)

The approximate location of the ferry traffic entrance road was in the middle of the 300 block of Biddle Street and at times, vehicle traffic backed up onto Biddle Street. It was really exciting when the ferry had to return to pick up fire trucks heading for South Chesapeake City.
